Planning a fluted panel feature wall

Product guides

Fluted panels add rhythm and depth to a wall: vertical grooves that catch the light and break up a large surface. Planning one is mostly a question of width. Every fluted panel in our range is 3000 mm long, so the height of a typical room is covered by one length, and the number of pieces depends on the width of the wall and of the profile you choose.

Here is how the main profiles compare, and how to work out what you need.

Choosing a profile

Our ten fluted profiles run from 40 mm to 170 mm wide and from 8.8 mm to 24 mm thick. Wider profiles give a bolder, more architectural look; narrower ones read as a fine texture.

157 Inner Arc Grille157 mm18.5 mm4.2 kg
153 × 24 Solid Grid153 mm24 mm5.9 kg
150 Arc Grid150 mm15 mm3.3 kg
120 × 9 Solid Grid120 mm9 mm2.4 kg
110 × 18 Solid Grid110 mm18 mm4.5 kg

The range also includes a 160 Triangular Grille (160 × 18 mm), a 150 Bamboo and Wood Grating (150 × 8.8 mm) and two corrugated gratings, 40 mm and 70 mm wide.

Counting the lengths

Divide the width of the wall by the width of the profile and round up to the next whole piece. For a wall 2.4 m wide:

157 Inner Arc Grille157 mm16
153 × 24 Solid Grid153 mm16
150 Arc Grid150 mm16
120 × 9 Solid Grid120 mm20
110 × 18 Solid Grid110 mm22

These figures use the listed width of each profile. Check the product page, or ask us, for the face width once the panels are joined, and add a spare piece to allow for cutting around sockets and switches.

In a room up to 3 m high each piece covers the full height. In a room 2.4 m high each length leaves a 600 mm offcut, which can often be used for a short section above a door or below a window.

Finishing the ends

Where a fluted wall stops at an open edge, an edge strip gives a neat finish. Matching edge strips are made for four profiles:

  • 170 Edge Strip, 41.6 × 23.5 mm, for the 170 Bamboo and Wood Grating
  • 157 Edge Strip, 30.5 × 18.5 mm, for the 157 Inner Arc Grille
  • 150 Edge Strip, 28 × 15 mm, for the 150 Arc Grid
  • 110 × 18 Edge Strip, 25.7 × 18 mm, for the 110 × 18 Solid Grid

Each edge strip is 3000 mm long, so one strip finishes one end of a wall up to 3 m high. A wall with two open ends needs two.

Finishes

Every fluted profile and edge strip comes in two finish series: Classic, with wood grain, solid colour, cloth pattern and stone finishes, and Metal. Order the panels and edge strips for one wall together, in the same series and finish.
